AmericanRecessionCalculator.com is a free educational tool designed to help Americans assess their financial preparedness for economic downturns.
We built this because most Americans don't have a clear picture of their financial vulnerability. The average American household has less than 3 months of savings — far below the 9-month standard recommended by financial experts as of 2026.
How It Works
Our Recession Readiness Score (0–100) is calculated using three weighted factors:
- Survival Runway (60%) — How many months your savings can cover your full monthly expenses, measured against the 9-month target
- Savings Rate (20%) — Your current savings relative to annual income
- Expense Ratio (20%) — Your monthly expenses as a fraction of monthly income
Privacy
All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We never store, transmit, or collect any of the financial data you enter. Everything is deleted the moment you close the tab.
